Work / Life Balance

Preferred Employers provides an on-site state of the art work out facility including cardio machines, TRX, rowing machines, free and machine weights as well as shower facilities.

Daily Fresh Fruit is provided to kick start your healthy day or for an afternoon pick me up.

Our Wellness Team maintains a regular schedule of events and activities throughout the year for our employees including Fitness and Nutrition challenges with Nutritionist and Fitness Training, Laughing Yoga, Massage Monday, Stress Management Relaxation Classes and Body Comp Screening.  Additionally, employees may participate in a Fitness Rewards Program and are eligible for monthly drawings.  A series of Lunch & Learns are conducted quarterly covering a range of health topics by certified nutritionists and doctors.

Throughout the year, tickets are made available to a variety of local sporting events.  Tickets are customarily provided on a first come/first served basis.  Employees are also invited to attend special events hosted by the company.  These include quarterly lounge events, annual summer event, local baseball game event, a holiday party and periodic surprise appreciation events. We also provide once a month surprise meal or snack onsite at no cost to our employees, via food truck, local bakery delivery, etc.

Employee Recognition

The ‘Cause for Applause’ recognition program was implemented to thank and reward outstanding employees for demonstrating ‘above and beyond’ behavior.  This program has several tiers the ‘Kudos’ is a public shout out to anyone in the company that is posted on PEEP (Preferred Employers Employee Portal) for all to see,  ‘Peer to Peer’ for colleagues to recognize and reward each other with a gift card, ‘Leader to Staff’ for managers to recognize and reward a staff member with a gift card, ‘Spot Bonus’ for managers to recognize and reward a staff member with a letter of recognition and a net spot bonus.  The ‘Presidents Award’ is awarded to a person or team that exemplifies Preferred Employers Insurance Core Values on behalf of the of their team and PEI, certificate and net bonus are presented in front of the organization.

Convenient Location’s

Preferred Employers Insurance San Diego is conveniently located at the 15 Freeway and Aero Drive in San Diego, CA.

Preferred Employers Insurance Walnut Creek is conveniently located in Walnut Creek across the street from the BART station, in the California Plaza right off the 24 and 608 freeways, one mile from the heart of downtown Walnut Creek.

Both locations have great selection of restaurants and shopping located near our facilities.  If you don’t want to go out we offer fresh fruit daily, healthy snack and drink options in our vending machines, located in our facility breakroom.

Time Away from Work

Preferred Employers Insurance recognizes nine paid holidays and one floating holiday for its employees in addition to time off for jury duty and bereavement leave.

Our vacation policy provides employees to accrue hours monthly for use when time off is needed for vacation or other personal situations.  Preferred Employers Insurance recognizes the benefit of employee loyalty and has developed a schedule of vacation day accruals based upon the length of each employee’s tenure with the company.

Employees are also granted Sick Time on an annual basis, to be used for their own sickness or the sickness and care of dependent family members.

Make-up Time

Preferred Employers Insurance understands and provides flexibility.  Our make-up time policy allows hourly employees to make-up time away from work for personal appointments.  Our policy allows employees to make-up 3 hours or 2 occurrences per month.

Preferred Employers Insurance offers high-deductible HSA/(Health Savings Account) option.  The high deductible plan with the HSA allows employees to make pre-tax contributions to pay for eligible medical expenses.  We also offer a Prescription Drug coverage with three tier of co-pays based on the type of drug (i.e. generic, brand-preferred deduction).  Preventative and diagnostic services are covered at 100%.

Flexible Spending Accounts

Employees can save money on many health care (medical, dental, and vision), and dependent care expenses through Tax Advantage Reimbursement Accounts. These accounts allow the use of pre-tax dollars to pay for certain health care expenses (not covered by any other plan) or eligible dependent.


A comprehensive dental plan is offered at no cost to employees.  Family members may be added for a reasonable premium deduction.  Preventative and diagnostic services are covered 100%.


Coverage is provided through Cigna and is employee paid.  Annual eye exams are included.

Disability Insurance

Short-term and long term disability coverage is provided by the company at no cost to employees.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment

All employees are provided with benefits paid by Preferred Employers Insurance.

Life Insurance

Paid for by Preferred Employers Insurance, our life insurance benefit is equivalent to 1.5X your annual earnings.  Additional life insurance may be purchased by employee.  Spouse and dependent life insurance is optional and paid for by the employee.

Retirement and Savings Plan

The W.R. Berkley Corporation provides a generous Profit Sharing contribution to each employee’s 401k account annually.  Upon eligibility, the plan guarantees a contribution of no less than 5% of an employee’s salary each year.  The contribution increases based on Preferred Employers Insurance’s overall profitability and performance.

Employee Assistance Program

Our EAP provides confidential support, information and resource referrals for a variety of issues – both work and personal.  The program includes three free counseling sessions for household members and adult children.

Public Transportation Reimbursement Program

Preferred Employers Insurance reimbursement program reimburses employees up to $72.00 per month for utilizing public transportation to and from work each month.

Employee Referral Program

Employees are eligible for an Employee Referral Bonus upon a referred hire successful 90 day review with the company.

Career Development

PEI University 101

These courses are to allow all PEI employees to learn more about each function of our organization.  Classes are lead by our Executive Leadership team and include Underwriting, Claims, Finance/Actuary, Operations, Human Resources, Information Technology, Marketing and Risk Advisors Management.  We also offer various onsite leadership courses lead by internal and external resources.

Computer Based Training

Online courses for a variety of topics are available to all employees as company required or personal development.

Onsite Training

We host onsite training via internal and external trainers. Classes may include leadership training, time and project management, Customer Service, Teamwork, Professional Communications and more.

Learning Library

Various departments provide a library of books and videos for you to increase your knowledge and development.

Tuition Reimbursement

Tuition reimbursement is offered to employees – up to a maximum of $3,000.00 per calendar year (undergraduate or graduate) – who continue their education through approved business processes with accredited educational programs and facilities.

Seminars/Learning Events

Employees are encouraged to develop their technical land professional skills participating in training seminars at the expense of Preferred Employers Insurance.  This may include: public seminars, vendor training, webinars, audio conferences, and/or purchasing resource materials.
